Holland & Hart is pleased to announce that Brit Merrill, an associate in the firm’s Salt Lake City office, has been selected as one of Utah Business Magazine’s 40 Under 40 honorees in 2023. Annually, Utah Business recognizes young professionals who are changing Utah’s business landscape, for being accomplished individuals, and for the ways they’re elevating the future of business throughout the state.
Before becoming a lawyer, Brit served as a youth educator at Red Butte Garden and later as a community organizer at Wasatch Community Garden, where she fostered inclusivity and cooperation between numerous partners, including Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. Under her leadership, Wasatch Community Gardens grew from 4 to 13 community gardens in the Salt Lake Valley area.
A member of Women Lawyers of Utah (WLU) since she was a law school student, Brit has served in various WLU roles, including as a board member for six years, a member of the Judicial Mentoring Committee, and Chair of the Historian Committee, leading a six-year effort to collect oral histories from older and retired women attorneys and build a relationship with the Aileen H. Clyde 20th Century Women’s Legacy Archive to house Utah women lawyer’s historical materials and. She has also served as the WLU liaison to the Utah State Bar Commission and was nominated and selected to join the board of the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations. In June, she will assume the role of WLU President.
A passionate advocate for women attorneys, Brit was chosen as a featured speaker in October 2019, when State Attorney General Sean Reyes dedicated a space in his office to Utah’s first women lawyers. She also was invited by Rep. Karen Kwan to speak at a rally for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment at the Utah State Capitol building. Brit is also a valued mentor, champion, and sponsor for developing lawyers—particularly women lawyers—within Holland & Hart and in the Salt Lake legal community.
Brit is a member of the firm’s Employment law team, providing strategic legal counsel and risk management advice to clients on a wide variety of employment matters, including compensation, performance management, separations, leaves of absence, discrimination, harassment, diversity and inclusion, workplace privacy, wage and hour compliance, restrictive covenants, reasonable accommodations, and employee classification. When disputes cannot be resolved through counseling and negotiation, Brit effectively advocates for clients in state and federal court and before administrative agencies.
Brit will be honored at an awards celebration on February 23, 2023. Read the Utah Business 2023 40 Under 40 feature online here.
