Holland & Hart is proud to announce that partners Jon Katchen, Tom Sansonetti, and Jim Spaanstra have been named to the third edition of the Lawdragon Green 500: The 2024 Leaders in Environmental Law guide. Katchen was recognized for Natural Resources & Environmental Law, Sansonetti was recognized for Natural Resources & Environmental Law, and Spaanstra was recognized for Environmental Law & Natural Resources.
This Lawdragon 500 practice guide honors the nation’s leading environmental lawyers, ranging from wolf advocates, to sustainable finance leaders, experts in greenwashing claims and regulatory gurus who help businesses navigate environmental regulations to successfully develop projects. Selections are based on independent journalistic research, submissions, and vetting with peers and experts in environmental law.
Katchen leverages extensive state government experience and sophisticated knowledge of Alaska's resource and economic development opportunities to help energy industry clients achieve their business goals. Katchen’s practice focuses on natural resources project development, defense of governmental and citizen enforcement actions, and complex commercial litigation. He also counsels investors and resource development companies regarding economic development opportunities in Alaska.
A longtime litigator and project team leader, Sansonetti helps clients permit and develop projects with potential obstacles in mind. Long before a lawsuit can threaten a project, he counsels clients on how to develop effective plans of action that will meet government environmental permitting requirements and stand up to judicial scrutiny when those clients' projects are challenged in court. He has served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division in the Department of Justice and as the Solicitor and Associate Solicitor for Energy and Resources at the Department of the Interior.
Clients turn to Spaanstra for sound environmental counsel on complex permitting regimes and guidance to navigate the energy transition. He counsels energy and natural resource clients on permitting, compliance, and environmental enforcement matters. Clients benefit from his extensive experience permitting complex projects in the Mountain West involving complicated environmental issues. Spaanstra also provides sophisticated guidance to clients with solid and hazardous waste operations on a variety of matters including project siting, permitting, operation, and remediation of commercial waste management facilities.
